Sender eMail Address Whitelist/Blacklist Filters

XE-Filter v3 now has the capability to test a message sender's email address against a whitelist and blacklist of addresses and domains.

With these additional tests, XE-Filter now provides six layers of email protection.

XE-FILTER TESTING ORDER

1.

Sender whitelist

2.

Sender blacklist

3.

IP whitelist

4.

IP blacklist

5.

IP Country-of-Origin

6.

DNS Blacklist

Counts for these new features appear under the XE-Filter Statistics Tab as <SENDERWL> and <SENDERBL>

WARNING: CMS recommends that the Sender Whitelist feature be used only with explicit email addresses and when absolutely necessary.

Do not, under any circumstance, whitelist the domain names of pubic and free email systems (AOL, MSN, Yahoo, etc.). These domains are often used by spammers.

Automatically Archive Statistics

Every night, XE-Filter v3 will now save the statistics file connectionLOG.XML into the ARCHIVE subfolder.  This is automatically done with the arrival of the very first message XE-Filter receives after midnight.

Since the connectionLOG.XML files are small, a long history of message traffic can easily be retained.

Automatically Archive Configuration

XE-Filter v3 makes a back-up copy of its configuration file "XEFilterMan.exe.config" every time information is successfully written.

In the event of a system error or the corruption of the configuration data, XE-Filter automatically restores the file, preserving settings and registration.

Automatic Country-to-IP Database Updating

XE-Filter v3 periodically checks a CMS Server for updates to the Country-to-IP database.

If an updated database is available and if your support remains active, XE-Filter v3 automatically retrieves it and updates your installation.  A message is automatically sent to the registered email address confirming the update.

If the XE-Filter site is no longer supported, an email is sent to the registered address noting the existence of the DB update and that due to the expired support, it could not be retrieved.

Protects Against DoS Spam Attack

The new XE-Filter "Sender Blacklist" filter can easily stop Denial-Of Service (DoS) spam attacks, in the form of non-delivery report messages (NDR), through the use of the reserved keyword "#BLANK#".

Also known as "Backscatter" or "Blowback", this type of spam attack has the potential to overwhelm mail servers with millions of NDR messages.

NOTE: The "#BLANK#" keyword should only be used during an NDR Dos attack since this will prevent all NDR messages, illegitimate or real, from ever reaching your email server.

Refusal Code Added to SMTP Error Text

To help in determining why a correspondent's message was refused, XE-Filter now adds a refusal hint at the beginning of the SMTP Response Code String specified on the XE-Filter Manager's Options tab page.

When XE-Filter refuses a message, it issues an error code and text. so that the sending mail server can generate an NDR.  If the recipient of the NDR can forward it to the XE-Filter Administrator, these codes can help determine the reason the message was refused.

eMailed Statistics Contain Machine Name

For sites with XE-Filter installed on multiple machines, the nightly statistic email will contain the machine name on the subject line.

This will clarify the information received by the XE-Filter Administrator from multiple machines.

Easier To Read Information

The XE-Filter Manager now has multiple tab rows that automatically adjust with the screen display width of the utility.  These also display a more descriptive name for each tab.

Under the Statistics Tab, commas have been added to the statistics numbers, making them more easily readable.
