Installing Praetor on the same machine with Domino SMTP Server

Praetor can be installed on the very same machine as the Domino server but only if that platform is using Windows 2000 or 2003 server.  If your Domino server uses a different Windows platform, then you will need to install Praetor on a standalone machine.

Normal SMTP message transfer occurs using the TCP/IP SMTP standard port 25.  When Praetor is co-resident on the same machine with the Domino server, it will be necessary to change the SMTP MTA to let Praetor become the message receiver.  Only when Praetor determines the message is acceptable will it be transferred to the SMTP MTA.   Thus it becomes necessary to reconfigure the normal receiving port used by Domino, changing it from port 25 to 28.

You can read to see how this is done using the Domino administration program.

Note:

Some firewalls allow you to place Praetor on the protected side and still have direct reception from the sending mail host.  This is done by designating a tunnel for port 25 on the firewall to be dedicated to the Praetor machine.

If your firewall has its own mail receiver and simply relays messages to Praetor on the interior, then Praetor's SMTP protocol level filters will be de-activated as these tests use the connecting host's IP address.  Obviously in such a situation, the connecting host is your firewall.  An example of this is the DNS blacklist server which Praetor queries by using the IP address of the connecting (sending) mail server.

Before you attempt to install Praetor, you will need to insure that the virtual SMTP server that came with Windows is already installed by using Control Panel Services to see if the entry for the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) exists.  If it does not exist, then you need to install it first before you attempt to install Praetor.  In fact, it is imperative that you have that Windows SMTP server fully operational and passing messages into your mail server before Praetor is ever installed.  This critical dependency reflects the fact that Praetor is now an extension of the native Windows SMTP server, which is a component of the Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS).

As mentioned in the Overview, the installation process involves insuring other Praetor components are present, installing them as necessary.  Click on the links provided to read the details of installing that specific Praetor component.

1.

Install the blank Praetor SQL databases

2.

Update the Bayesian database with the default word list

3.

Install PLGV, the Personal Log Viewer web application to give your users the ability to self-release their quarantined messages.

After all of these components are successfully installed, the final step is to install Praetor filter.

Note:

Don't forget to change the SMTP port that the Domino SMTP server is using from the standard 25 to 28.  After this configuration change is made, you need to stop and restart the SMTP MTA in order to have this port change take effect.

When Praetor starts, it is set to begin filtering inbound mail items from the Internet.  In order to enable filtering for outbound messages, it is necessary to configure Domino to re-route all outgoing mail back to Praetor. Click here to see how this is accomplished in the Domino administration program.
