SOUTHFIELD, MI — JULY 20, 2006
— Computer Mail Services, Inc., a leading email security and
management software provider recently completed a poll of their
customers to determine the effectiveness of filtering email by its
country of origin. Results showed that blocking email by country of
origin instantly eliminates 40% to 90% of all unwanted email traffic
before it ever reaches a company’s local email server.
The companies included in the poll used CMS’ XE-Filter product to
block email from all countries outside of their area of business
operations. Each company showed that very high volumes of email
arose in areas where they had no business activity. This unwanted
foreign email was all spam and its elimination instantly reduced
loads on their installed spam filters and email servers.
On average, the polled sites showed a 59% reduction in email
volume. The largest reduction, at over 90%, came from a Canadian
childcare provider with no foreign business interests. The study’s
lowest percent reduction in unwanted foreign email was 40%, detected
at a United States-based publishing company who could not ban China
due to legitimate correspondents. In one month, the publishing
company eliminated almost 500,000 spam emails from France, Korea,
Brazil, Poland and Spain.
“Most people don’t realize how many emails originate in places where
their company has no business interests”, said Alan A. Sitek, Vice
President of Development for CMS. “Using knowledge of your business
operation to block email by its country of origin brings good
results for everyone involved, except the spammer of course. This
simple tactic instantly eliminates a substantial percentage of
spam”.
The XE-Filter product used in the
country-of-origin filtering study is available in a 21-day
evaluation version from the CMS website,
