SOUTHFIELD,
MI—(May 4, 2000)—
As
the “I LOVE YOU” e-mail virus continues its destructive sweep across
the planet, one company is providing a solution that prevents the
digital intruder from ever reaching corporate e-mail servers.
Computer
Mail Services, Inc. (CMS), a Southfield, Michigan-based developer of
messaging software products and services, offers PraetorÔ,
a security product that prevents unwanted e-mail from ever reaching a
company’s Microsoft ExchangeÔ
e-mail server. The application goes far beyond the basic capabilities found
in MS Exchange server, implementing tactics that scan for specific
attachments, domain names, subject text lines, and recipient addresses,
among other criteria.
“Our
customers who have Praetor installed on their e-mail systems have
avoided the virus altogether, with no outside help, once they know what
to look for,” said Lih-Tah Wong, President of Computer Mail Services.
“Praetor acts like a messaging firewall outside Exchange,
preventing the ‘Love Bug’ virus from ever entering the company’s
e-mail system.”
“The
problem with conventional anti-virus solutions is that when a
high-profile, fast-moving virus hits the Internet, companies all over
the world attempt to download fixes from the Web sites of the top
anti-virus software companies. The
system becomes jammed,” continued Wong.
“With Praetor, all that a company e-mail administrator needs to
do—assuming they have Praetor installed on their server—is enter the
offending file name into Praetor’s ‘Banned Attachments’ list.
Once they re-start Praetor, the server—and the entire
enterprise—is protected.”
As
installed in a system, Praetor is supplied with 20 different default
rules to filter out unsolicited or unwanted e-mail attempting to enter
the server, or to keep sensitive material from ever leaving.
There is also a suspicious attachment list that will cause e-mail
containing such attachments to be quarantined.
To
assist at-risk companies, Computer Mail Services today installed
detailed ‘Love Bug’ instructions on the home page of its corporate
Web site, www.praetor.net.
The instructions explain how to modify Praetor to automatically
stop the “I LOVE YOU” virus from entering the corporate system.
The company also offers a free 21-day evaluation copy of Praetor
from the same site.
