Others Discover What CMS Knew in 2003 -- RNDR ATTACKS

In June of 2003 at the Microsoft Tech Ed conference, Computer Mail Services issued a press release announcing our discovery of a new  spamming tactic that we called the Reverse Non-Delivery Report (RNDR) attack.  Many were skeptical of CMS' claims and said so publicly:

"This doesn't seem to be a technique to get spam out ... We see some of spam email like this but it's down at the noise level"

Matt Sergeant -- Senior Anti-spam Technologist -- MessageLabs
"...it looks like a marketing ploy".

The Register (June 2003)  -- Read Story...

A network solutions provider quoted in our press release recently sent an email to a sales representative about others also discovering RNDR attacks but 10 months after CMS announced it.

Subject: Fw: Email Attack...rediscovered!

Hi Pam,

Long time no speak. I thought you would find the articles below interesting. It appears that these guys are now claiming to have "discovered" the reverse NDR attack, even though you guys made the press release, along with my quotes, at Microsoft Tech ED last year.

EVEN NOW, FOLKS ARE STILL "DISCOVERING" RNDR ATTACKS

The End of the NDR
eWeek 8.27.2007

Taken from the eWeek Article...

"It has become common for spammers to forge originating e-mail addresses and to then send large spam runs against different servers."

"...NDRs have other nefarious uses. Many services stopped sending NDRs years ago because of Directory Harvest Attacks..."
