Improved DNS Blacklist Usage

Other products query the DNS-based blacklist servers only at the SMTP protocol level.  Thus these products must be able to receive the message directly from the transmitting mail host so the connected IP address may be used in the query. As a result, the best these products can do is log the blacklisted IP address.

Praetor's protection goes beyond this.  By default, Praetor adds and enables a message level DNS blacklist check. This approach gives two distinct advantages over using just a protocol level test:

Praetor can correctly identify the connected IP address of the external mail host even when situated downstream from the message point of entry.
Praetor records more information than just the IP address, adding the sender, recipient and subject.


As a result, communications from blacklisted partners are quickly identified, and, as shown below, their IP address can be added to Praetor’s bypass list.
