How does a message flow through Praetor to the destination e-mail system?

Message flow through Praetor occurs in three steps, summarized below.

Praetor determines the direction of the message (inbound or outbound) by looking at the intended recipients' domain.  If all recipients' domain are recognized as local domain(s), then the message is considered an inbound message to a local user.  Otherwise the message is considered as outbound and destined to an Internet recipient.

STEP 1

A message from the Internet is received by the Windows SMTP Service (part of Microsoft Internet Information Services) and once it passes any transport level tests, Praetor is called to analyze the received message.

STEP 2

Praetor creates a temporary message file in the OUT folder, determines the message direction and filters according to the inbound rules and Bayesian analysis.

One of three possible mandatory actions will occur, depending on the incoming rules that are in effect:

Reject

Praetor deletes the message file

Quarantine

The message is moved into the Praetor\Quar folder

Accept

Praetor notifies the Windows SMTP Server to deliver the message

Optionally a copy of the message may be placed into the Praetor\Archive folder.

STEP 3

Windows SMTP Service transmits the message to your mail server.
